The treatments of all the diagnosed disorders are done using various therapeutic techniques, equipments and multi modal approach.

Scope of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology

Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists (ASLPs) work in diverse settings, including medical colleges, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers, treating patients with hearing loss, vestibular disorders, speech defects, language delays, and swallowing disorders across all ages. ASLPs play a crucial role in restoring communication skills in patients with head injuries, strokes, laryngeal cancer, or birth defects. Their roles span medical clinics, research labs, the armed forces, and even space sciences, highlighting their versatility and expertise.

ELIGIBILTY

For admission to the BASLP course under IHS, the following criteria must be met:
  • Candidates should have passed 10+2 (higher secondary) or equivalent examination of any state or national council/ board of education with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate.
  • Candidates should have studied Science subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Biology as their main subject.
  • Candidates should be at least 17 years of age.

Application procedure for admission

To get admission at IHS, interested candidates must undergo the IMAT examination. The IHS Medical Aptitude Test (IMAT) is a national-level entrance exam for admissions to undergraduate (UG) courses. Based on the IMAT score, they shall proceed with the admission process, starting off with the seat booking, followed by counselling. All admissions that commence in the upcoming academic year shall be through the IMAT.

For applying to IMAT you must:

  • Go to the Institute of Health Sciences website at ihs.ac.in
  • Click on the Apply Online IMAT tab.
  • Enter your name and other details.
  • Upload the required certificate files.
  • Pay the IMAT application fee of ₹2,000.
  • A counselor will review your documents and confirm your application for IMAT.
  • You will be guided to attend the entrance test. Your admission shall be based on the merit list in the IMAT entrance test.

Term and exam for BASLP

The course starts in July, following a syllabus from Utkal University recommended by the Rehabilitation Council of India. The graduates undergo six semesters of coursework, clinical exposure, and practical training, followed by two semesters of supervised internships. Each semester includes theory and practical papers in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology. Marks are awarded based on internal assessments, midterm scores, and university-conducted semester exams for theory. Clinical exams are jointly conducted by internal and external examiners. On completion of the course, they receive a Clinical Competence Certificate from the Institute of Health Sciences and a degree from the university. Registration as an ASLP is done under Rehabilitation Council of India to work as a professional in India.

After completing the four years of Bachelor of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (BASLP) course, graduates can pursue higher education including a Master’s degree or a Doctorate. They can be an academician, or research scientist join occupational health centers, government, or corporate hospitals as specialist clinicians, or start private practices.
